USACE Launches Water Level App

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — The Army Corps of Engineers, Little Rock District recently launched a mobile App for fisherman, navigators, paddlers and park visitors. The App delivers current water conditions for Corps’ reservoirs, rivers and streams within the district boundaries to include the McClellan-Kerr Arkansas River Navigation System.
Corps To Deffer Permit Requests For Summer

Corps Investigates Algae

The US Army Corps of Engineers is investigating high concentrations of algae on Beaver Lake.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – FLW, the world’s premier tournament fishing organization, has announced the 2013 Walmart FLW Tour schedule. The 2013 season will be comprised of six tournaments featuring up to 160 of the best bass anglers in the world. The Forrest Wood Cup, the world championship of bass fishing, will be held on the Red River in the Shreveport-Bossier City area of Louisiana.
A three-mile stretch of undeveloped Beaver Lake shoreline is part of a 1,954-acre acquisition – purchased for $3.91 million – completed recently by the The Nature Conservancy of Arkansas.
The transaction was done at the request of the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission, which has received preliminary approval to buy the land from the NCA and establish it as the state’s 71st natural area. Read the rest of this entry »
An unusually high number of drownings on Beaver Lake has park rangers working to make things safer.

Low Water Levels Reveal More of Monte Ne

Low levels at Beaver Lake are beginning to expose more and more of a century-old historic site in Northwest Arkansas, and the future of that site is also in question.
The Monte Ne historical site in Benton County, built around 1900, was originally a hotel called “Oklahoma Row.” William Coin Harvey, a well known politician and lecturer, built and operated Monte Ne as a popular health resort until the ’30′s.
What’s left now is mostly ruins, except for the “tower section” of the crumbling old hotel. Read the rest of this entry »
Citizen scientists, rejoice. It’s time for another Secchi Day on Beaver Lake.
The annual event, organized by Beaver Water District, equips volunteers with Secchi Disks which are devices that are lowered into the lake to measure the transparency or clarity of the water. This measurement, when collected over time, is an indicator of the water quality in the lake which is pretty important considering that Beaver Lake is the source of our drinking water.
